A good early 20th century Indian teak “Zanzibar” chest with applied brass decoration – Omani, Kuwaiti, Bahraini, Zanzibari, etc often refer to where these chests were acquired and not where they were made. They often originated from the West Indian coast, from Surat down past Bombay. Local craftsmen made them from teak and other hardwoods and then transported onwards down the coast to Africa. Majority of these chests were imported from the Gulf, initially with the transfer of Omani power to Zanzibar in the 19th century.
