A beautiful late 19th/early 20th century Japanese Meiji period Shibayama blue lacquer, gilt ivory and bone display cabinet (Shodona) on stand - lower section of what would originally have been a taller cabinet. Shibayama is the art of inlaying into ivory, wood or lacquered surfaces, pieces of shell, semi-precious stone, ivory, bone, horn etc in a way that leaves them proud of the surface, which are then intricately carved. Sliding doors and panel doors over 3 drawers (drawers open with small recess to upper central drawer front).

During this period from 1868-1912, the Meiji Emperor, who was hugely enthusiastic about Japanese art, supported the industry, which was developed by the Shibayama family – with interest of Western countries in this artform following the Paris Expostion in 1867
